Dino, a goalkeeper coach from Croatia, discussed the importance of goalkeepers in handball and their impact on the team's performance. He highlighted the need for goalkeepers to adapt to the game's increasing speed and physicality, as well as the changes in technical rules. Dino also emphasized the significance of mental training for goalkeepers and shared his experiences as a goalkeeper coach in various clubs and international camps. He concluded by discussing his daily work and plans as a goalkeeper coach at Esther Magdeburg.
Training Goalkeepers: Physical and Mental Development
Dino discussed the importance of not dismissing potential goalkeepers based on physical attributes, especially in young ages. He emphasized the need to give every kid the opportunity to train, provide motivation, and share knowledge and space. Dino also highlighted the importance of understanding the mental and physical requirements of goalkeepers, including their ability to enjoy the position and their willingness to learn. He suggested that goalkeepers should be trained to develop basic skills such as coordination, speed, agility, quickness, flexibility, and endurance. Dino also stressed the importance of individual support and development for goalkeepers, and the need to give them success feelings in training. Damir agreed with Dino's points and expressed his intention to share these insights with the youth coaches.
SAQ Training for Goalkeepers
Dino discussed the importance of performance, good feeling, and trust in professional sports, particularly in goalkeeping. He emphasized the need for constant exchange and feedback to improve performance and build trust. Dino also introduced the concept of Speed, Agility, and Quickness (SAQ) training, which is popular in dynamic sports like handball. He explained that SAQ training aims to develop neuromuscular coordination, improve reaction times, and boost overall athletic performance. Damir, who was present, agreed to explore SAQ training further and mentioned his current training schedule for goalkeepers.
Goalkeeper Training Methods and Adaptations
Dino discussed various goalkeeper training methods, emphasizing the importance of adapting warm-up exercises to improve player performance. He demonstrated different training phases, including controlled shots, free shots, and game-like situations. Dino also highlighted the need for goalkeepers to constantly change positions and recognize shot directions. Damir agreed with Dino's approach, noting that it was effective in his own training.
Goalkeeper Training and Tactical Decisions
Dino and Damir discussed the importance of preparation and mental readiness for goalkeepers in training and games. They emphasized the need for goalkeepers to be comfortable with their movements and to have a good understanding of game situations. Dino suggested that young goalkeepers should analyze their own performance through video analysis, while professional goalkeepers require more detailed and intensive preparation. They also discussed the challenges of managing goalkeepers' workload and making tactical decisions during games.
Mental Training for Goalkeepers
Dino discussed the importance of mental training for young and professional goalkeepers, emphasizing the need for realistic goals and constant performance improvement. He highlighted the significance of communication with goalkeepers, setting achievable targets, and developing mental strength to manage stress and pressure during games. Dino also shared his daily work routine, which includes daily training sessions with goalkeepers, and the importance of seeing the game through their eyes to help them develop individually.
